L-Theanine 101: What It Is, How Much, and Why It's in DreamOn

Turn over a bottle of sleep gummies and there's a good chance you'll find L-theanine on the label. It's in DreamOn too. So what is it, and what does it actually do?

What is L-theanine?

L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. People often credit it for the calm, focused feeling a cup of green tea can give you.

As a supplement, it's popular for one simple reason: people take it when they want to unwind without feeling knocked out. That makes it a natural partner for a bedtime routine.

Is L-theanine a sleeping pill?

No. L-theanine doesn't sedate you. Think of it as turning the volume down, not turning the lights out. That's exactly why it pairs well with a small dose of melatonin: melatonin gives your body the "it's evening" signal, and L-theanine helps the mental noise settle while that signal does its job.

How much L-theanine is in sleep products?

It varies a lot. In the sleep products we looked at, amounts ranged from 50 mg to 300 mg per serving. Some products don't print the amount at all. They list it inside a "blend" with no milligrams next to it.

DreamOn has 50 mg per serving. It's a supporting ingredient, not the whole show. It works alongside 2.5 mg of melatonin and 25 mg of reishi, and every one of those numbers is printed on the pouch.

Does it work for everyone?

Honestly, no. Some people love it. Some say they "never noticed a difference." And for a small number of people, it does the opposite: calm in the body, but a mind that keeps going.

That's normal for supplements. People respond differently. Two tips if you're trying it:

  • Change one thing at a time. If you start three new products the same week, you'll never know which one helped, or which one didn't.
  • Give it a fair run. Same time every night, for a few weeks, before you decide.

Who should check with a doctor first?

If you're pregnant or nursing, take medication (including blood pressure medication or antidepressants), or manage a medical condition, ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding L-theanine or any sleep supplement.

L-theanine in DreamOn

We built DreamOn as one gummy instead of a nightly stack of bottles. Each serving has:

  • 2.5 mg melatonin (1.25 mg per gummy), a small "it's evening" signal
  • 50 mg L-theanine, the calm compound found in green tea
  • 25 mg reishi, the mushroom used for centuries to wind down (fruiting body, 10:1 extract)

Take two gummies 30 to 60 minutes before bed. And if it's not for you, you have 60 nights to tell us.
