Can I Take Melatonin Every Night?

It's one of the most common questions people ask about sleep supplements, usually right before they buy: "Is this safe to take every night?" Or the version that keeps people up: "Will I still be able to sleep without it?"

They're good questions. Here's what's worth knowing.

Why people worry

A lot of people have been burned before. Some relied on over-the-counter sleep pills and woke up feeling like a zombie. Some took a high-dose melatonin gummy every night for years and started to wonder what it was doing. Others noticed that something "worked at first" and then seemed to stop.

So the worry makes sense. But melatonin, sleeping pills and antihistamine sleep aids are very different things, and dose makes a big difference.

What we know, and what we don't

Melatonin is a hormone your body already makes every evening. Short-term use is the best studied. There's much less research on taking it nightly for many years. That's not a reason to panic, but it is a good reason to:

  • Use the smallest dose that works for you. Sleep experts often suggest adults stay at 3 mg or less. Many store gummies are 5 or 10 mg.
  • Know what's actually in it. In a 2023 JAMA study of 25 melatonin gummies, the real amount ranged from 74% to 347% of the label. A clearly printed, low dose matters.
  • Check in with your doctor if you find you need it most nights for more than a few weeks, or if you take other medication.

"Will I be able to sleep without it?"

This is really two questions. Can you stop? And will you sleep well if you do?

The best way to make sure the answer is yes: don't let the supplement do all the work. The habits around it matter just as much, and they keep working whether or not you take anything:

  • The same bedtime and wake-up time, every day.
  • Lights low and phone away for the last hour.
  • A short routine your brain learns to recognize as "the day is over."

A supplement taken at the same time each night becomes part of that cue. Over time, the routine itself starts to do some of the work.

What about "it stopped working"?

Some people find a product works for the first few nights and then fades. Often the response is to take more. That usually isn't the answer. If a sleep aid has stopped working for you, try looking at timing and routine first, and talk to your doctor before increasing the dose.

How we approach it with DreamOn

DreamOn was made for nightly use as part of a routine. That's why we kept the melatonin low: 1.25 mg per gummy, 2.5 mg per serving, printed on the pouch. There's no THC, no CBD and no antihistamines in it.

It's for adults. If you're pregnant, nursing, on blood thinners or other medication, ask your doctor first. If you need help sleeping most nights for more than a few weeks, talk to your doctor too.
